Tony Sund’s (Pedersöre, Pohjanmaa) time at the 2025 MM-kisat in Stockholm is officially over, as the injury he took against the Swedes will take longer than two weeks to heal. The 29-year-old defenceman will be returning to the capital and will prepare for the next Liiga season with IFK once he recovers.
Jere Lehtinen, general manager of the national team, said in a statement published by Suomen Jääkiekkoliitto on Tuesday: “It is a very unfortunate situation. The images show that it is an injury that will prevent him from playing”. Lehtinen also added, “At the current moment, we are not adding a new player, but we are monitoring the situation. We will know more by the time the weekend arrives”.
Lehtinen now has three open roster spots for the national team. Jan-Mikael Järvinen (Pirkkala, Pirkanmaa) and Joona Ikonen (Tampere, Pirkanmaa) are with the team in Stockholm, but have not been playing, and could be replaced with another member from one of the eliminated NHL teams after the second round comes to an end. However, they are both forwards - if the Panthers are eliminated, Niko Mikkola (Kiiminki, Pohjois-Pohjanmaa) is eligible to replace Sund. Mammoth defenceman Olli Määttä (Jyväskylä, Keski-Suomi), Rangers defenceman Urho Vaakanainen (Joensuu, Pohjois-Karjala), and Bruins defenceman Henri Jokiharju (Oulu, Pohjois-Pohjanmaa) are already eligible to replace him.
In a report published by Iltalehti’s Harri Hepojärvi, Antti Pennanen was quoted as saying about the plan to replace Sund from the roster: “If Sund is injured, then we take a new player to get stamped. Or Sund takes the stamp for a while, but once all the passes are stamped, then we free up Sund’s stamp and it can be used again”.
The next game for Finland is Thursday against Slovenia (0-0-0-3), who are still yet to win a game at this tournament, or even pick up a point after three regulation defeats to Canada (0-4), Slovakia (1-3), and Latvia (2-5). The puck drops at approximately 17.20 (EET); we will be covering that game, with a liveblog starting 50 minutes earlier at 16.30 (EET).
